In case of a discrepancy, the German original will prevail.<br /><br />Job description<br /><br />At the Department of Safety and Quality of Fruit and Vegetables at the Karlsruhe site, you will work in an interdisciplinary team dealing with current issues related to the safety and quality of plant-based foods. You will complement our expertise in the fields of bacteriology, mycology, food chemistry/analytics (incl. metabolomics), nutritional physiology and toxicology with the area of molecular plant physiology/plant biology. You will take over the management of the laboratory unit "New Production Systems", in which we are currently focusing on the quality and safety of products from vertical farming systems/indoor cultivation. You will thus be responsible for the scientific and technical design and further development of this laboratory unit, including the following activities:<br /><br /> <br />the initiation, conceptualization, application, implementation and supervision/coordination of internally and third-party funded research projects in the field of "New Production Systems" in collaboration with other laboratory units of the Department of Safety and Quality in Fruit and Vegetables, other MRI departments and external cooperation partners,<br /><br />the planning and supervision of scientific experiments, e. g. to investigate the influence of cultivation conditions on the quality and safety of plant foods and to elucidate the underlying plant physiological processes, as well as the evaluation and interpretation of the data obtained<br />the publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals and their presentation at scientific conferences, as well as other representation of your field of work on a national and international level (including travel)<br />advising the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (preparation of expert reports, statements, etc.)<br />the responsible supervision of the department's facilities and equipment in the area of plant cultivation (e. g. greenhouse, phytotrons, plant growth cabinets)<br />the extension of the method spectrum of the Department of Safety and Quality in Fruits and Vegetables in the field of molecular and cellular plant physiology, complementary to metabolomics platforms established in the department<br />the holistic plant physiological interpretation of the results of cultivation or post-harvest experiments (incl. metabolomics data, etc.) in collaboration with other laboratory units<br />the guidance and supervision of technical staff, PhD students and Master students as well as<br />the preparation of work safety risk assessments as well as the planning, implementation and control of safety measures in the laboratory unit "New Production Systems", considering legal and MRI-internal requirements<br /><br />Your profile<br /><br />Mandatory requirements:<br />a successfully completed Master's degree (overall grade: good to very good) in plant physiology, plant biology, plant sciences or a comparable qualification in a related field of study<br />several years of research experience in the field of molecular plant physiology or a similar field, with proven publication record in peer-reviewed international journals<br />the special ability to independently conduct scientific work, generally demonstrated by a successfully completed doctoral degree<br />sound knowledge and several years of practical experience in plant cultivation and investigation of molecular and/or genetic mechanisms of plant physiological processes<br />very good communication skills<br />very good command of written and spoken English<br /> <br /><br />Preferable are:<br />knowledge and experience in indoor/vertical farming or soilless cultivation of plants (hydroponics, aeroponics)<br />knowledge and experience with laboratory-specific management tasks (incl. work safety, quality assurance in scientific laboratories, guidance of laboratory staff and students)<br />experience in the acquisition of third-party funded projects<br />knowledge and experience in project management<br />knowledge and experience in the field of statistical experimental design and statistical data analysis, and<br />knowledge and experience in integrative interpretation of experimental data from different levels of plant biology (data from cultivation/cultivation, data from physiological experiments, phenotyping data, metabolome data, transcriptome data, etc.)<br /> <br /><br />We expect a good ability to express oneself in German, both written and spoken. Aside from independent and responsible working methods, as well as the ability for inter and intra disciplinary collaboration, a high degree of motivation, personal commitment, team spirit and a willingness to cooperate with colleagues and other institutions are also required.<br /><br />Our offer<br /><br />We are offering at the earliest possible date a permanent full-time position at the Karlsruhe location of the Max Rubner-Institut. The weekly working hours are presently 39 hours. The employment contract is subject to the regulations of the civil service collective wage agreement (TVöD-Bund).
